When your website finally sounds like you
When you’re starting out, your website proves you’re real. At some point it has to do something harder — sound like the business you’ve actually become.
What’s your website for? When you were starting out it was all about explaining your offer, sharing reviews and driving leads. But eventually your website takes on a different job.
The signals that got you here won’t get you there
At some point the question changes. Your prospective clients aren’t asking Who’s this? That’s settled before they arrive. They’re asking something harder: Are they worth it?
That question doesn’t get answered by a Google rating or an industry accreditation. It gets answered by signals only an experienced business can send.
What those signals actually look like:
A clear point of view. Not how long you’ve been in business or how many locations you have. What you actually believe about how it’s done. This should send the tyre-kickers running for the hills.
A sense of your ideal client. Not where they live — how they think and feel. What keeps them up at night? What have they got to lose? Describing their frustrations proves you’ve done this before.
Your best work, not all of it. Three or four engagements that show exactly what sets you apart — not a portfolio of everything you’ve ever done.
A voice that sounds like you. Not polished-corporate, not lazy casual. The way you talk when you‘re explaining something to a client you respect.
Evidence of your thinking. A blog post, a case study, a point of view on something that matters in your field. Give away your best insights and people will want to work with you.
A newcomer can copy your credentials. They can’t copy these.
You don’t need to twist their arm. You just need to be you.
After you’ve been around for a while, your work speaks for itself. And your website doesn’t need to shout or prove anything.
It’s no longer about adding more proof and credentials.
Your website just needs to feel like it belongs to a professional who knows their stuff and knows how to help.
